For sports, the SLR type (in this case, the Canon 300D) is better than the ZLR type (in this case the Nikon 5700). The shutter lag time is one concern. The image is captured almost the instant the shutter is pressed on the SLR type camera. For ZLR, it could be up to 1/4 of a second. You may need a longer and faster lens for sports and it is very easy to replace in an SLR type camera. The ZLR has a fixed maximum zoom range which may not be long or fast enough (although the Nikon 5700 allows an attachment to increase the focal length to 420mm). Hope this helps.

I started with a Canon 10D and upgraded to the Canon 20D. For the money the 20D is the best buy under $1500 (body only). With 5 frames/sec capability, predictive autofocus, and the same DIGIC II processor that the 1D Mark II has, it takes great sports pictures. You can use up to a 4 gig microdrive with this camera for all the storage space you need, plus this camera writes images to the compact flash card at the same time its taking the shot. Some cameras wait until the shutter button has been released to record the images. Plus with multiple RAW image settings you can really get high end pics from this camera.
