Where to sign a photograph?

I am starting to sell some of my work and I do not know if I should or should not sign my photos? If I do sign where to I sign, what do I sign it with pen or pencil? Are there any other methods of signing(besides photoshop)? I have been trying to find information on the internet but have not had any luck on the subject. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Depends, I think, on what the media of the photo is and what it is used for. :)

If it is a straight photo with no matting, then signing it in the corner with an archival pen(no pencils! No normal ink pens!) should be fine. You don't want your signature to intrude on the photo itself. Otherwise, the photo becomes nothing more than a signature board.

If the photo is matted, then you would most likely mount the photo on a board, sign the board itself so that the photo itself is undisturbed.

But typically, a signature in the corner is what I have seen. That way, should the matte boards need to be replaced, the signature is still part of the photo.

If the use of an archival pen is important as otherwise, there is risk that a normal pen or pencil will cause deteriation of the image over time.

You can get archival pens at a local hobby/art store.

Using Photoshop to sign your images in mass printings or for web is fine. But for a fine art piece which you intend to imbue with greater value, a hand signature is more original.

I have been a professional picture framer for 12 years and can't even count how many times I've had customers come in to change a mat to update colors or to switch from old mats to new acid-free archival mats. I agree completely with Wing Wong about signing the mat. When you are rich and famous for your work, your photo owners are going to want that signature. I now sign the photo, usually in the lower right corner. If you do this be sure to keep in mind to leave ample room for matting. General rule of thumb is that framers come in anywhere from an eigth of an inch to a quarter of an inch when matting. Hence your signature should be in far enough so as not to get covered. Be sure to go for the archival pens. They are a little more expensive but well worth it.
