How to take photo of sun-setting? Last week I went to Mark Twain Lake and took few sun setting photos...Here are my two concerns: 1. When the sun is still yellow, I took sun with its reflections on frozen lake. When uploaded to my computer, I saw a lot of thin strips....I didnot use any filters. Filename: winter_1.jpg 2. When the sun is about to set, I took the photos...When I uploaded to my computer, I saw a red circular image around the sun, which made me very uncomfortable. The file name is winter_9.jpg.I didnot use any filters. I want to take some beautiful lfrozen lake reflections & sunsets...I have HP945 Photosmart. Any suggestions?

In the first shot, the yellow starburst effect is caused by light streaking off the edges of the lens diaphragm. A common by-product of shooting at a bright light source with a small aperture. The red circles in the second photo look like lens flare. Another common problem when shooting directly into the sun. The best way I know to get accurate sunrise/sunsets, is meter off a portion of the sky which is evenly lit, but is not exposed to the direct rays of the sun. Then, using that setting, re-compose to include the sun in the frame. Position yourself so that you can shoot on enough of an angle to allow the flare to fall out of the frame. Use a wider aperture if you want to minimize the starburst...(though many people prefer this effect).

According to the spec's...your camera has an aperture-priority feature. If you set it on f-5.6, your meter will choose an appropriate shutter speed for that setting,...based on your ISO setting. Check your manual, if you are unsure of how to set it.
