How to set camera up

I have Nikin N90 and using a handle mount Sunpak 555 Flash. I just purchased the dedicated flash module and cord to shoot TTL. I am not sure how to set the camera to ensure TTL is functioning properly. Please advise on how I should set everyting up?

The flash head shoot have the ttl setting. It talks with your camera and will shut the light down when needed. You can also use the flash on manual. I would suggest getting a flash bracket for the flash so it is positioned directly over the lens. Side mounted flashes put a terrible side shadow when photographing people, especially against a wall. I would suggest stroboframes press-T bracket. ($65-$75) Another thing to remember is that TTL can be fooled to shut down too early and produce underexposure. This holds true especially for light or bright backgrounds. Switch to manual in these situations.

Why would one photograph people against a wall?

I've always been taught to move people (and animals, for that matter) away from a wall, so that the shadow drops below them.
