Photography Question

So... What Can I Have Developed by a Lab?

I have been approached about doing some portraits of an 18 year old woman. She wants some of the portraits to be in lingerie and some to involve nudity. I am comfortable with my photography but am really unsure about how a photo developer might view these. I have a signed release and contract (proof of age, etc.) I just don't want to get crosswise with any laws.
PLEASE reply and advise me as to where I stand.
Should I contact a private photographer and have him do the developing or is it ok to send it to a Kodak lab?

A friend of mine works in a Kodak lab. Trust me... nothing will shock them anymore. In fact, some of the workers there have learned to tune photos without looking at the subject!

In any case, in Australia, unless the photos show something legally notifiable (i.e. would hold you as an accessory to a crime), the people at Kodak can't do anything with your photos.

I think the main concern would be that someone would get the photo and misappropriate it - i.e. they can copy it for themselves for a little perv or worse... post it up on the net somewhere! I'm in Australia, too, but I bet if you asked politely at a Kodak lab you'd get a nice honest answer. Just ask them... you won't lose anything. 8-)

I work at a photo lab, and it's store policy that anyone who copies or takes customers' pictures for their own use will be fired immediately. Plus, if the customer found out about it, they could certainly sue either the store or the employee for big bucks, so I don't think you need to worry about pictures being misused. Besides that, the people printing the pictures certainly won't care. We see so many amateur porn that it would be a nice change of pace to get something even half-way artsy and professional.

If you are concerned about anyone making extra copies for their personal enjoyment you should try a professional lab and not a one-hour photo store. Feel free to email me and I can forward the names of a few labs that will handle you developing in a professional and artistic manner. crispy@erols.com

I also work in a photo lab and our rule is... nudes are fine as long as there is no "activity"...self-involved or otherwise, if you catch my drift :)

I work in a photo lab and, trust me, you don't have anything to worry about. Unless it's kids or something super corrupt, I wouldn't worry about it. Nudity doesn't raise an eyebrow.
