camera confusion

I love this website and all the info. available. I currently shoot with a Minolta Maxxum QTsi and want to step up to a film based camera for the serious amateur/beginning professional. I was looking into cannon camera's because I've read their lenses are less expensive than Nikon. Now I've been told that Nikon lenses are far superior and that cannon camera's are really made for action based photography. Sounds like sales pitch to me. Does anyone have a GREAT deal of insight and advice. I do not have any experience with either camera and can only go by the wonderful photos I see in this website. Thanks, Terri

People with nikons say nikons are far superior. People with canons love their canons. I've never heard of canons being considered action based. The gap between nikon lenses and canon lenses has narrowed depending on where you buy from. But nikons are generally a little higher. I think that nikon still has some snob appeal that stores use to increase the mark up. But if you buy online from a good place, comparable lenses are kinda close in price.
Canon does have a bigger selection of economical lenses directed at beginners and casual users, but you couldn't go wrong with either one.
Look around, see who has what at your price. If you find a nikon that's a good price and you like it, buy. Same goes if you find a canon.

Canon user here. Love the system and recommend them. But, is there any reason why you're not considering Minolta Maxxum 5/7/9? They are no less "professional" than Canon or Nikon. Plus you could use the lens (lenses? and flash?) you already have without buying them again in a different brand. Use the money saved to add a lens or other accessory (flash, tripod, remote release,...) you don't have.

I own both a Nikon and Canon. Both have given me wonderful results and served me well. The lenses are about the same in price (Nikon may be just a little higher, but not much). But, I agree with Jon. Why not stick with the Minolta you already have if it's giving you what you want as far as quality? Put the money elsewhere for you new career. Good luck!

I currently use the Minolta Maxxum 5 as camera of choice, with a 28-105mm lense as well as a 70-300mm lense with an optional 2x teleconverter. I agree with Jon Close, if you are comfortable with the Minolta, stay with Minolta.
The next camera I will buy will be the Minolta Maxxum 7 digital camera.
It will be compatible with the equipment I already have.
Check out my gallery to see some examples of what the maxxum 5 will do!!

I also use a Maxxum 5 as a camera of choice. It's easier on the pocket book and it's lightweight is what won me over. I'm planning to purchase either the 7 or 70 in the near future even though both are very different. I have never had any problems or complaints. I'd keep your lenses that you have considering that's where your photos come from (good lenses). A camera is simply a light tight box holding your film. The lens is the worker. So it will just depend on which bells and whistles you want to accompany your light box. Use your money towards something else. Light meter, tripod, background...who knows. Or just a good book. In fact if you like the Maxxum 5, get it now...they're discounted for the arrivals of the 70.
And....in the fall they introduce the Dynax 7 digital SLR.
