Photography Question

Michelle Ross

Which Digital SLR??

I have a Sony Mavica Digital Camera and a Minolta Maxxum 5 SLR . . I would like to get a Digital SLR and have seen the Canon Rebel . . . I like the idea of the interchangeable lenses. . . but is this necessary with a Digital SLR or can I get the same results with a less expensive model. I really like Minolta products but want to make sure I can do what I want to do without regretting my purchase later. I would like to be able to do some portrait photography as well as scenics and closeups? HELP PLEASE!!!

  hi michelle,

I had sameproblem I purchased the minolta dimage 7 hi.had it 4 months and wasnt getting on with it(mainly sports photography)I soldit via e bay, lost 600 dollars australian, then I looked at the canon range,I already own a psa 20.and its superb, soi copmared the rebel and d10,wasnt much in comparison,so I went with the rebel,a canon speedlite 420 flash unit, and an extra 90-300 usm canon lense along with the standard 28-55 lenses.and sp far am rapped in this set up,I only use this set up now,and the simplicity of it is unreal,to me canon are just majic to use.

What kind of pictures do you take mainly? Indoor with flash, outdoor sports, wide angle, telephoto (need big zoom) low light, day time etc.

Give more details.

My preference in pictures are outdoor pictures of outbuildings, scenic, wildlife/nature, but I would like to be able to do some indoor with and without flash of my kids, I am used to using a telephoto zoom lens and like being able to not disturb things and still capture the picture. . . I do take some limited sports but that isn't a priority. I want to be able to have control over the aperature and shutter speed for snowfalls, moving trains, etc. . . I hope this answers your question!

Well your in trouble lens wise, if you like zooms to keep things undisturbed, but like scenic and outbuildings you need a decent wide angle and a decent zoom lens. But you don’t need both to start with. I would look at the Canon 300d, 10d, Nikon d100, and new Nikon N70. These are nice DSLRs that wont break the bank IMHO, but will give you full camera control and lens change flexibility. If speed is somewhat a consideration Take the 10d or d100 over the 300d. Since it sounds like your shooting during the day you won’t need to buy the fastest lenses so that could save some money. Definitely get a shoe mount flash for the camera, the built in ones are good at very close range and can cast shadows on the picture depending on the lens you use. Picking between the few cameras I listed is going to be a REAL PAIN unless your budget dictates what you can buy.
Check out www.imaging-resource.com for excellent reviews, but more than that you can compare pictures side by side of taken by two different cameras. If you do decide to go Canon I can help you out with Lens choices, but its also best to go to a local store and try them on your camera body to see what the lens can see. Snap a few photos with it and go home to examine the results before you buy. The thing with DSLRs is the lens can make or break the final result. Putting a el cheapo lens on one of these cameras would be really bad.

Thanks for the Great information David! I live in a very remote area and camera stores are few and far between . . . I do have one that is very reputable and knowledgeable but also somewhat pricey . . . Thanks again!
