Photography Question

International Library of Photography

I, too, am a semfinalist in the International Library of Photography's on-line contest. I was wondering if anyone know anything about the books they offer and what they are used for. The material the International Library of Photography sends with your winner notice states the books are "A resource for public and academic libraries, advertising agencies, and worldwide news media" To me, it makes it seem like they want you to believe that peole will buy your work from you.

Has anyoone ever actually spoken to the orgnaization? What are they all about?

I'm under the impression that it's just something that you can say you got your picture in. Advertising agencies don't look at that book for anything. So you're not going to be getting a call from a corporation.
You will be in somebody's library. But it's really like that book that publishes peoples poetry from all over the country. I don't want to bust your bubble, but that's the vibe I get from other people who've talked about it.

  Well Ann,
join the club - a couple of years ago I found that site also and entered a few photos and yes! they to also made it to the semi finals. I tried to contact them, I mailed them, I did nearly everything and gave up. they are really just for entertainment I believe and you will never hear from them in person. I have heard of people that ordered the book and it took forever to even get it so please dont waste your time. Here at Betterphoto.com is the best site I have come across and if you want to learn learn learn the people on this site are soooo friendly and the advise is great. my advise is 'give up on international library of photography and stay with betterphoto.com :-) good luck Ann.

  Hi Ann.
I have also entered some photos in the International Library of Photography. For a few of the photos I entered I recieved a letter stating that they were going to publish my photos in their next book. My impression of it all was this...I think they sell the books to the artists that are in the book. I really don't think anyone else buys them. They get their money from the artists. It seems like a scam so I just threw my offers away.
I agree with Pamela. Stick with betterphoto.com.
Jessica

Ann - Don't send them money this is a scam. If you have a really good photo, get slides made of your print & get on the internet for LEGITIMATE contests. If they tell you that you have a winning photo this should mean that you have a winning photo - YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE BOOK!!!! I was dumb & bought one when they were $69.95 & the second for $59.95. When I got the book ALMOST 2 YEARS AFTER I ENTERED THE CONTEST, I was very disappointed they publish every photo they are sent & then sell you the book after saying you have a winning photo. Oh, yes and you can also buy the plaque, a commemorative bowl, etc etc etc. I have just received another email from them about a desk calendar for $39.00 + $10.00 for something else. I can have my photos alone not others put in a calendar for $15.00 or less. Trust me this is a scam. There are other Q&A's on this the one that Jacque or something close to that spelling started & it is bunches of people who have been screwed by this "make the amateurs spend money". The book is not worth $70.00 and definitely not $90.00. Mine had photos of babies in saggy diapers - there were some really good photos, but they will publish anything that is sent in. Try going thru other threads on this site & see how disappointed & very very angry most of the people are about ILP.

Craig - I mentioned in another thread here that I thought about sending in the "rear end" of a horse & that I bet they would say I was a winner. So, I think everyone in all the threads (I think there are over 60) should send the same type photo - like the horse's "rear end" just to see if we all get accepted as WINNERS. What a farce.

Anne it is a scam. I had my photos printed up in one of their books. I bought two. Then came the trip to Washington DC. Thank god I didn't go. My girlfriend also recieved the samething from them. It really disappointed me when I found out cause I love photography and someday hope to maybe sell some of my work. All they do is lead you on and it is heart breaking. So don't fall for their tactics. And I think it would be a great joke to send in nothing but well you know BUTT pictures.

I have a photo of 4 elephants' backsides - it would be fun to have 500+ people send in animal tushes just to see when they notified all of us that we have "unique perspective & artistic talent". The turkey sounds appropriate as well as the cow!!!

as long as its somethings butt... it would be a scream.. and we can start a thread here as to who sent it what shots and another post for when your shot is declared a winner. it would be really funny and would really "jam" up thier site with animal behind photos at the same time, thus telling them what we really believe them to be!

Craig - I'm certainly "game" how could we do this & get everyone else involved? I am more than certain that everyone would get a "Congrats letter" from them or none of us would - would be interesting, but we should know who & what is sent - photos could be posted with a response in this thread, but maybe BetterPhoto would not want to be tied to it. Something to ponder & work towards. Let me know if you come up with a way - I'll think about it too, anyone else?????

I am also a semi-finalist in that contest too. I talked to them when I first got the letter to find out about the book. I ordered it in Nov. and have not heard from them. I am going to try to contact them again this week to see where my books are. I have looked at other photos on the website sight and I think everything ever sent in has made it in their book. My mistake for being suckered into believeing my photo was extremely good. live and learn. This is my photo I entered.

Ok Ann, Craig & all - I got on 2 other threads (Marla's & Jacquelyn's) re: Picture.com & explained about your question Ann & Craig & my conversations & what photos of the "rear end" of animals we sent & "showed them mine". I also urged everyone on each thread to follow suit & do as we have done. Now let's sit back & wait. I've marked my calendar to see how long it takes for Picture.com to notify us of our artistic ability.
