Photography Question

My lens is dark

I have a cannon elan IIe. When I look through the viewfinder to take a picture, it is dark. I can barely see the subject whether inside or out. It will still take a picture if set to manual mode with a flash. I'm wondering if I've locked into a setting. I'm very new to this camera and photography. The manual isn't helpful with this problem.   Some lenses are darker because they have a smaller maximum aperture, which lets less light through the lens. A zoom lens with maximum aperture of f/4-5.6 will be less bright than a simple 50mm f/1.8 lens.

It is possible that the lens you are using has a malfunctioning aperture that is not opening fully. What brand and model lens is it?

The Elan IIe also has a function called Depth of Field Preview that closes the aperture to the setting chosen so you can see how much of the scene will be in apparent focus before taking the picture. Normally you have to activate this manually, by looking at a special mark with the Eye Control Focus, or (if you've set CF-11 to 1) by pressing the AE-Lock button. It's possible this circuit in the camera is malfunctioning and keeping the aperture stopped-down.

John, thanks so much for your reply. I took my lens in today and found out that it is a gonner. The aperture was stuck. We hooked it up to another camera and it didn't work. So, today I upgraded and hopefully will have a succesfull weekend and get a better rest tonight.
