Manipulating Images

Yes, Not to offend. But could someone tell me please why most selected winners and pictures that place for your monthly best contest, well, why are a majority of them manipulated, I've seen some good work but when a picture is changed thru a computer program, even in the slightest way, how can a photographer still call themself a photographer. Again, not to offend, I just don't understand it. I use a DSLR, but I do nothing to my work in any program, I use the camera as my sole tool.

  Hi Marc,
As a purist, I can empathize with your views in this issue. As a "small fish in a big pond" of great photographers, I understand that digitally manipulated imagery is more than a current trend...it is the wave of the future. To survive in the photography business these days, requires a knowledge imaging programs and manipulatory techniques.

For the most part, I think the judging practices here at BP are focused on three things...: creativity of vision, originality of ideas, and technical excellence.
Many software manipulated images meet these judging criteria.

Maybe it would help if BP created a seperate category for those entries which contain computer enhanced imagery. Many on-line contest allow only slight enhancement of sharpness, brightness, and contrast to overcome deficiencies in scanning, or downloading from a digital camera.

Thank you Bob, for responding. I agree to a certain extent "computer photography" is becoming a phase. I however pride myself, and is the main reason I do so well with my clients, that my images are pure, precise, clear, untainted and is what "thank goodness" is getting my name around as being original in my work. I do agree with you also on having two seperate categories on photo contest...one for true, accurate and untouched photography and another for computer generated photos.

Again, Thanks for responding!

You can't worry about what gets selected in a contest. Be your own worst critic, if you got what you want, then that's the main thing. There's been some very good pictures and then there's been some pictures of toys that I've seen selected in the contest. So only enter a contest for fun, not for validation.

Hi Marc, I just find this site and it is great. As someone who does quite a lot of computerized manipulation for clients I may have some input for you from this perspective. First things first, I am in no way offended. I find that in order to make any minipulated photo look good, you have to have good photos to start, this is where photographic talent in absolutely necessary. There are those of us who just can't stop there. Sometimes a vision goes beyond your original photo and opens the door to an expression of art as well as photography.

I agree that there should be separate categories to differentiate between photos that have been enhanced and those that haven't. I think that would be a more fair way of judging.
