Diffusing filters

Any suggestions on a really good soft focus filter for black & white portrait photography? I'm starting a headshot business and with the lens I'm using, the shots are coming out too clean and sharp. I know that's a good thing in most other situations but I want to soften it up a bit without losing too much contrast.

Some make soft focus lenses. Haven't ever used one. Tiffen and Cokin make one I believe. Or if you can't find one there's other ways of getting the same effect.
An eight point star burst filter has that effect because of all the scratches that make the stars. Putting some vaseline on a uv filter. You can do a viganette effect with that by just putting it around the edges and leaving the center clear.
