shooting on a overcast day

I shot the two pictures on a recent cool and overcast day. I was on an outing with novice photo-enthuasists at delhi in india.Although I tried to use whatever I remeber of the principles of composition, the photos have been rejected with contempt by all the partcipants, but no body is tellin me what went wrong. I used a cheap camera zenit,slr,50mm lens. how could I had improved the results, sir and what are ur honest observations about these? It was remarked that despite use of color film of 400 asa , it shows black and while photography!should I continue the photography or leave for something else as I am a retired person aged 57 yrs.
thanks
vinod

Your colorless photo is only due to the fact that there wasn't much color in the scene you were photographing. I would maybe have waited for a person to walk by wearing something with a bright color like red or orange..sometimes we have to wait for the right moment to get a good photo,,Hope that gives you some ideas..
