How to Photograph Diamond Jewelry

Have tried to photograph some jewelry for the purpose of scanning image to ebay or other media for sale. rings, pendant, etc. gold w/diamonds. I tried a black background and took snapshots with and without flash. Photos did not turn out clear and detailed and diamonds are not distinct. Any tips?

you use straight on flash from the hot shoe?

try having light at 45 degree angle from camera.

Rather than flash, try two incandescent light sources...each from 45 degrees. (similar to a copy stand set-up).
This will give you complete control with regards to lighting and elimination of any shadows.

Try a bright colored background instead of black. When advertizing a product, a bright red or yellow background is a real attention getter. (The florescent cardboard sheets sold in most craft stores are cheap and work well for this.)

Use a small aperture setting to produce a starburst effect on the brightest reflected part of the diamond.

Note:....If your camera is film based, you need to use tungsten balanced film or use proper filtration.

Hope this helps,
Bob
