Lighting for dances held indoors

My husband and I have just recently gone digital and love it EXCEPT when we photograph a special event, Prom, Homecoming etc we get distortion in the faces. My husband calls it pixeling but I don't know that much about the camera part since I usually do the background set up, people work, etc. We usually photograph these dances under florescent lighting and wonder if that's the problem. On some of the faces on the last dance pictures, they looked like they were cracked!!!!UGH!!!
My husband also tried to darken some of the prints before he sent them over the internet to order. We wondered if any of these things caused our problem. ANY HELP YOU COULD GIVE US WOULD BE APPRECIATED. When we photograph sports outside, we don't have any problems, the pictures turn out great. MANY THANKS
