Focusing speed

I shoot high school sports primarily with a Nikkor 85/f1.8 and Tokina 80-200/f-2.8 on an Nikon F100 body. The Nikkor seems to focus faster than the Tokina but I have no proof. This information would be helpful in lense selection, that is, if variation is significant between lenses or manufaturers. Is there data available that shows focusing speed of lenses by any manufacturer? Or is this solely a function of the camera body capabilities?

Don't know of any available data, but focusing speed has to do with camera body and lens type. Smaller focal lengths and bigger maximum aperatures allow for faster focusing. And since your tokina is also a zoom, that affects it also. put your nikkor on a lower level nikon body and you'll get slower focusing.
