Photography Question

Darren K. Fisher

I need A Flash, and Bracket to shoot weddings

I need help. What I am shooting with is the Canon Rebel 2000, I have shot a couple of weddings and done ok, but I really want to take this a step further. But to do this I feel I need a better flash. I am unsure what flash I will need and money is a factor as well. I hate to say!!! LOL... I am also saving for the new Rebel DSLR. So I am sure the flash will be compatable. Lets me see...I guess you will need to know about my lenses as well. The weddings I shot I used my 28/80 lens but I also have a 70/210. Thanks in advance for any help. And I hope I have made sense here.

For compatibility with the Digital Rebel, you have to go with either the low end non-TTL manual or automatic flashes from Vivitar et al (which will require you to shoot in M or Av), or the more expensive EX line of E-TTL capable flashes from Canon (or the E-TTL compatibles from Sigma or Metz).

With non-TTL/automaic flash you need to make sure it is of recent design/manufacture with a trigger voltage of 6v. Many terrific older model flashes were designed for non-electronic manual cameras and unfortunately can have trigger voltage exceeding several hundred volts and will fry the circuits of an EOS camera.

You will need the Canon Off-Camera Shoe Cord 2 (OCSC-2) to connect the camera to a flash on a bracket.

  Darren,
For the money, I don't believe you'll find a better flash than the Vivitar Model 285 Flash. Many pro wedding photographers use this flash with great success. It will not allow you to use TTL flash metering, but works perfectly in either auto-range or manual mode. I've used mine on my Canon G2 digital, as well as my Bronica medium format system with no problems.
God Bless,
Greg
