Photography Question

Budding young freelancer

Sounds crazy, but my 8 year old has been shooting pictures since he was 5 with my Pentax 38mm~f=70mm camera. He has won first place ribbons, best overall ribbons and been named "best young artist" in our county. All of these awards are for seperate competitions. Recently several of his photos were put on display in a local art gallery and several sales were made from that show. He has said since he was 5 that he wants to be a freelance photographer. So when he was 6 we started copyrighting his photos and are now marketing some as postcards at local antique and art stores. (More to get his name out there, than for the money, obviously). We live in a small tourist town where there are art shows about once a month through different organizations and we hope to get into some of those and learn how to exhibit. I am also thinking about submitting some of his photography into stock libraries to put some money away for his college. Is this a good way for a nature photographer to get the "bread and butter" when he isn't selling to private people? Can you recommend any other avenues I can look into to help him use these young years to develop some sort of income? Thanks, Janis

I think it's great that your son is getting such a good head start on his, hopefully, future career. The sooner one finds his path, the better. As far as generating income from stock, look at stock catelogues. Until your son can match that consistent quality, and have thousands of images on file, constantly producing new images, he will not be brought on as a stock photographer. Stock agencies don't care who or how old or how talented anyone is. All that matters is quality and profilic output.

What you're doing now is fine. Try to get him into a gifted/talented school for the arts or special cirriculum.
