flash vs hot light

I am wanting to shoot pictures of neborns and I was planing on useing flash but I found out by reading info that useing flash could hurt the newborn's eyes and yet I see in the photo books that some use flashes on the new born.
Could you please tell what is correct
Thanks,
Heath

I dont think there is a correct answer here. Everyone will do something different, and only one will be the best bet for you. If you have the lights set back aways from the newborns and have a soft box as well as some ambient light in the room, the flash will not be that strong.

However, babies like it warm and maybe continous lighting would work here. I have not used it myself, but as long as the babies don't get overheated, warmth from lights might help them to relax and not get a chill.

I would rent some different lighting and see what works best for you before you invest.
