Possible the effect is caused by stray light hitting the front lens element, which is solved by using a lens hood. That the film only appears on 1/2 the image leads me to suspect instead that you have a light leak in the camera back. Check to make sure the back closes tightly, and that any seals around the edge or around a film window haven't deteriorated, or that the camera body or film back are not cracked.

Thank you Jon for your response; I suspect that it is from light hitting the front lens element, although I did use a lense hood (not a very deep one, just the one built in on the lense itself. If it was a light leak, wouldn't all of the pictures on that particular roll (and others) have that effect? The problem was with 5-6 images in a roll of 24 exposures.

You mentioned that the effect occurred on your outdoor photos. Just a guess that the effects of the leak are only apparent with bright sunshine.
