Making Big Life Choices For Dummies

Oh my goooooodness- I am SO glad I found this sight! It's just what I may need. Thank you so much for this!
Here's the deal: I am a Junior in HS, and I just got a Canon EOS Rebel 2000, and I love it so much that my parents may despair on ever having a son-in-law. :) This year in school there is a push on "What do you wanna do?" and I've come to discover that I love taking pictures. It is one of my 3 potential career turns. I want to find out more about it, like, what it requires, how I can be better -just pretty much finding out what is involved. What I appreciate about this sight is that I can contact people and they can answer specific questions, whereas the rest of the internet is oblivious and pre-programmed and thus doesn't help.
I NEED help. I want to contact people and ask them so that my specific needs and goals may be met or molded. Basically, in my situation, what do I do to truly discover more instead of just seeing big flashy signs that say, "Attend our college! We're the best! We offer a photography class! We don't care if you're passionate about it or need to tell you how you can progress in this area, because we're great! Apply now!"
If you have any references in people, websites, telephone #s, colleges, trade schools, classes that will help me, I would really appreciate that b/c I want to pursue this but am not getting any real information on what to work on or even where to start. I hope you can assist.

Well first I think that you should decide on what field of photography you wish to get into. Fashion, landscape, advertising.....etc. What appeals to you? Do you enjoy photographing people or animals? Do you like to take pictures outside or in? Do you want this to be a full time career or a weekend hobby? It really all depends on you. Take advantage of your youth and your new camera. Go out and shoot everything and find out what makes you squeal inside. You may not know right off the bat, but you will narrow it down. Some people do all of the above very well, and others excel in only one area. Dont be fooled by flashy signs, educate yourself on the school and what it has to offer to you. There are many sites that help you out, and it comes down to which ones you feel comfortable with. For example, I have been on a million sites but I get the most information, for me, on this site and Photosig.com. Just keep in mind that there is a whole world out there that is just waiting for you to come and capture it on film. There is a saying that I go by (not sure who wrote it) it goes like this: Art is a representation of that which the mind can imagine but only the heart knows to be true.

I am so with you! Im a senior in High school doing the exact same thing. I am soo addicted to finding the right stuff that I have spent lots of money. First I would save your money for a nice camera such as a fuji s2 pro. its expensive but it is well worth it. I have the same kind of camera that you have, And I know it takes wonderful pictures, but there is so much more you can do with digital. you want to have adobe photoshop 7.0 it is expensive as well, but it is heaven to photographers. Just look up on the internet at other photographers and learn from their work, also e-mail other photographers for help. TRUST ME THEY DO HELP!! hoope to hear from you soon!!
