How to use black panels as reflectors

Hi Vik,
We are now in your 3rd lesson for dtudio lighting...You have stated for us to use black fabric panels, foam core, or mat board. I'm a little confused if I need 1 or 2. Is it for one side of the subject or do we place one board on each side of the subject?

  Lisa,
You need to post your question in your course's Q&A. I doubt Vik will see it here. If you're having trouble finding it, just send Jim a note, and he will direct you to the right place. Black will absorb, not reflect, light.

Black panels are for blocking or 'stopping' the light from 'spilling' or spreading where you don't want it to go. You can use black panels to block your main/key light from hitting the background or your subject, or whatever you don't want it to hit. They are also useful for blocking kicker or hair lighting from your lens. Kicker lights are sometimes used to add just a little extra sparkle to a specific point such as hair or a portion of your scene, and are pointed in the general direction of your camera. Black panels and gobos (go-betweens) are used to block this light from causing flare/glare and other nasty stuff to appear in your finished photos.

Hope this helps some.
