Grad ND filters

Graduated ND filters. . .
I am researching the different graduated ND filters on the market and have come to the conclusion that the rectangular Singh-Ray Grad ND is most likely the one for me. It says something about a Cokin "P" holder. What is that? An adaptor ring was also mentioned. Both of these mentioned are custom sized when used with a 84mm wide by 120mm in length. I have a 72mm lens right now. I am new to the whole rectangular filter idea. I need to know what I need to buy besides the actual filter. I was also wondering if anyone knew the differences between the acryllic filters vs. glass. It seems that glass would be superior. Any thoughts would be useful. Thanks.

  Hi Ryan:

The adapter ring screws onto the lens like a filter, then the "P" holder slides onto the ring. There are 3 slots, of which you should cut off the outermost two to avoid vignetting when using wide angle lenses. Do you need this? Probably not. I've been using these for many years and hand hold them in front of the lens. You can see the top of the frame darken when hand holding. Since you already have the filter, try holding the filter by hand to see if it works for you. If not, then get the adapter ring and "P" holder.
Glass v. acryllic - glass breaks, acryllic scratches. A scratched filter will still work fine.
