Depth Of Fields

hi,
i own the Canon eos 300v and have had it for a while but I still have difficulty with the DOF Preview button as I dont understand it.
all I see is the veiefinder getting darker and lightter when I change the aperture around.
am I doing something wrong, as iwould like to make full use of that feature on my camera but not sure what to look for and how to use it,
if anyone knows how it works and how they can teach me about it please contact me,
aravinda

Aperture controls the depth of field - the near-far range of objects that appear in focus. Smaller apertures decrease the amount of light to the film/viewfinder, so the image appears darker when you activate DoF preview, but let your eyes adjust to the darker image and you should be able to see the increased range of in focus objects. The difference may not be very noticable if you're only stopping down 1 stop, say from wide open f/4 to f/5.6. Try setting f/16 and check DoF and the difference should be easily seen.
