A Horizon Line
how to take pictures with a horizon line in it and where to take it.

Melanie, A "horizon line" is where sky meets earth (or water). If there are many man-made structures (buildings) the horizon line is where the sky would meet the ground if the buildings weren't there, and even though it may not be prominent, the human mind will subconsciously produce a feeling for its location. With that, I don't think the "where" need be answered. It should be obvious.-- John

Melanie, while John's answer is correct, I would add that 'where' to take it, or place it, depends upon the composition. You might want to put the horizon line in the upper third or lower third or somewhere near that, to make your composition more dynamic; a horizon line in the middle can create a boring, static image, unless it's a reflection scene when the symmetry can make the picture even stronger. The choice is yours, but it's a good idea to keep the horizon line OUT of the middle for more interesting images, in my opinion.
