Shooting Night-time Events

On Novemember 2nd, I will be going to the small Island of Janitzio in the state of Michoacán, Mexico, to see El Dia de los Muertos. I plan on taking photos of a night-time candle-lit procession, however, taking photos at night is not one of my strengths. What shutter speed, focal length and film speed should I use? Could I take pictures without a tri-pod? Taking photos at night without flash and tri-pod is one of the most perplexing things about photograghy for me. Is is possible to shoot with 100 speed film? I will be using the Nikon N6006, 35mm – 70mm Nikor lens. Your help is surely needed in Mexico. Thank you

  Hi Marco,

I am not familiar with your camera, but one thing is for sure, don't EVER use a film with ISO 100 if you are shooting in the dark. I've done plenty of night time photography. I tend to use an automatic mode which basically regulates everything on its own. Go for a film with a higher ISO, like ISO400, ISO1600. I would also recommend Kodak Ultra film because this is a film for all conditions. Make sure you also have a good flash.

Suerte!

I never considered setting my camera on auto. That's more of a safer than just clicking away. Thanks Hannah

Try using the tropod. I was recently shooting a concert and because I didn't use tripod (since I never do) this resulted in hand shake and my pictures turned out to be terribly blurry. I also think that you should go for the highest film speed possible. Try to find something higher than ISO 400 even, like ISO 1600, ISO 3200 or higher. To keep it even more safe, shoot half of the pics in a fully automatic mode and the other half in manual, by adjusting everything yourself.

Good luck and enjoy!
