How to Shoot Dark Animals

I have to shoot pictures of 2 black dogs and taking the pictures indoors. The problem is the coats of the dogs are shiny and reflect the light from the flash. Can you suggest a good way to compose the picture and to take it without the reflection of the flash.

  Hi Ann,

This could be a big challenge, depending a lot of your equipment. You are right to avoid the on-camera flash. It also depends upon how much control you have over this indoor environment.

Is there any possibility that you can beg, borrow, or buy a couple of studio strobes? At the least, I would try to get one studio light with a soft box? (Any pro camera shops around you where you might be able to rent the gear, along with a light meter? You may have to go the mainland but it might be worth it.)

If not, go with natural light (around a big window, perhaps) and a good reflector (i.e. white foam core or a store-bought reflector)

See ya in class ;-)
