Photography Question

Lana Manis

Glossy or Matte?

Which type of finish do you suggest? I shoot anything from family and pets to landscapes and closeups. These are for myself or given to family. I also shoot photos of my craft items in a natural setting (such as: if pillows, I may display it in a vintage chair with an antique quilt; if a framed needlework, I may lean it on a shelf with a bouquet of flowers beside it, etc.) for my pattern covers or for submitting to magazines. I do frame some of my prints and I do put photos of the craft items on the pattern covers. I've often read glossy prints are sharper, but I really like the look of a matte print. How and when do you decide to use which finish?
Thanks, Lana

Lana, it's really up to you which finish you prefer. I happen to like glossy because I think it prints better and the colors just look bolder on glossy paper. If you're looking for another way to get a matte finish, you can always buy glare resistant glass for your frames.

Kodak makes a satin finish paper that is somewhere in between glossy and matte.
