zoom lenses what are all those numbers about?


i,m thinking of buying a zoom lens for my olympus SLR OM 10. can you please explain the basic specifications and give any recommendations for someone trying to get a bit more seriously creative? many thanks.

  Hi Imelda:

First off, it's important to know what style of photography you're attracted to.

For people and city scenes, I would suggest a 35-70mm f/2.8 lens.

For scenics and landscapes, I would suggest an 80-200mm f/2.8 lens.

For flowers, I would suggest a 105mm f/2.8 macro lens.

You actually will probably get at least all of the above as you get more into photography, but it's always best to know WHY you're buying a particular piece of equipment.
