best digital camera for shooting macro

I am about to upgrade to a new digital camera and want to concentrate on macro shots. I want to get as close as possible and am confused reading reviews as to what camera does this best in the 4to5hundred dollar range. Does the Nikon coolpix 4300 have a macro lens that can be added. I want a high 3 or a 4 MP capability.

I don't think there is a macro lens that can be added, however macro focus range on the built in lens is 1.6 inches. Some macro lenses can't get that close. In general I think Nikon has the best macro capability, I was in your situation and found that the 4300 was the best camera at that time (last June). Other brands macro capabilities are 6-8 inches. I am very pleased with the camera and it's macro capabilities. I haven't found anything it couldn't shoot. I have uploaded some macro pictures to show waht it can do.

Annie: Many digital cameras with built-in zoom allow you to focus as close as 6-inches (or even closer). Decide on a budget and then check a retailer's web store for cameras in your price range. (The specifications include Minimum Focusing Distance.)

I seriously wonder if you would ever use a 1.6-inch focusing, however.

You would also need to use a tripod for sharp images in extreme close-focus (macro) shooting.

Cheers! Peter Burian
