Depth of Field

I am taking a beginners course in photography and am completely stumped about depth of field (Focus). I have looked for info on the Web but the language seems to be too technical. Where can I find info that would be easy to understand and also how everything (f-stop, shutter, etc.)comes together. Thanks.

Check the library. If you memorize the following you are on your way its the basis of photography.

Depth of field is the amount of the picture that is in focus(sharp). The depth of field is dependent on the f number (also known as the aperture) you use. F numbers are generally from f2.8 to f32. HOWEVER... the SMALLER the number the LARGER the APERTURE! (F STOP). If the number is smaller, it gives you less (smaller) depth of field but it is referred to as a LARGER f stop (or aperture)!

So if you take a picture of a field of flowers at 5.6 less flowers will be sharp than if you set the camera at a SMALLER f stop such as f16. Remember the lower (smaller) f stop (number) is referred to as being a LARGER f stop (aperture) and the HIGHER numbers are referred to as being SMALLER but you get much more sharpness.

Practice, practice and write down what f stop you used for which picture (number your notes). There is a lot more once you understand this basic. You need to read this over until it becomes second nature and then you can learn the next trick such as which shutter you should use. I hope this helps and feel free to write again let us know how you do. Try to find a book which explains and shows pictures!
