The difference between CF I and CF II is the size of the card. The CF II card is a little thicker and will not fit in a CF I slot. I believe they made it thicker in order to hold more data. Neither is "better" than the other; just different. A microdrive is a CF II card that actually has a tiny little spinning hard disk drive in it, just like the disk drive in your computer, only much, much smaller. I have read that they require more battery power than regular CF cards because of the spinning disk drive. I personally wouldn't use one because out of fear of the disk going bad or becoming corrupted due to jostling of the card. As for brands, there are a lot of good brands out there. I don't know that one brand is a lot better than another. I've got a couple Lexars and a couple of SanDisks. I'd suggest sticking with major brands (don't buy no-name cards). Make sure you know what kind of warranty you're getting with the card. Warranties vary quite a bit from one manufacturer to the next.
