Camera upgrade

Currently have a Canon Rebel and Minolta Maxxum HTsi Plus. Looking to upgrade and buy a new camera. Looking at a Canon EOS Elan 7E or Canon EOS-3. Any thought or suggestion. The more I read about cameras the more confused I get. Help!

If you're considering the EOS 3, then your budget should accomodate the Maxxum 7, which is a very good body and allows you to use the Maxxum lens(es) and accessories you already have.

Otherwise, what specifically is confusing to you?

Jon, I just wanted to ask you a question!..I know that probably the best camera is either a Nikon or Canon (that's what many people say), and Perhaps the best from Minolta is the Maxxum 7!...

But also some people say that Minolta brand was popular on the 80's but now it seems that it's popularity, and probably the capacity to fight against Canon and Nikon, is not there; that Minolta bodies are just too fragil and incompetent against the other two!...

I know that the you have to have an eye in order to be a great photographer, regardless of the brand!...

But technically what do you think Jon?...

Minolta Maxxums are no more "fragile and incompetant" than any similar advanced-amateur Canon or Nikon body. The Maxxum 7 does not have the extra dust/moisture seals or heavy professional build of the EOS 3, Nikon F100, (or Maxxum 9), but then neither do the Elan 7 or Nikon N80.

If you have a current need for a digital slr as well as a film slr and want to use one set of lenses for both, then it would make sense to limit your choice to the Canon and Nikon lines. But if your current need is only for a film camera, then there is no need to exclude Minolta and Pentax from consideration.

Some of the Maxxums are indeed built very lightly. Lots of plastic internals. The 9000 is well known for bleeding LCD panels, once it starts it can't be stopped. At one point, Minolta was shipping extra loads of LCD panels for this model. There are also electronic issues with several of these cameras. And there are lots of complaints on web repair and enthusiast forums about malfunctioning cameras.

Minolta marketed one AF camera model after another, constantly introducing new ones, and the parts department could never keep up. Now that parts have discontined for many of thes cameras, they are a risky buy used.
