Photography Question

How to shoot water movement

Hi, I have been trying to shoot waterfalls and streams etc, on a long exposure time to give a kind of silky water effect. I have tried it on about 3-6 seconds, as I have read in photography magazines but the pictres come out really over exposed.
Does anybody have any tips on how to shoot a perfect picture.

Cheers,

Simon.

Well for starters you have to shoot when the light is lower and/or use fiters (polarizer, ND filter etc) to cut out the light so that you can get exposures that allow you to use slower shutter speeds. If the water is moving across the plane of your film then a shutter speed of 1-2 seconds is usually enough to make the water silky (depending upon the speed of the water). 3-6 seconds will usually result in water that looks more like fog than silk.

Cheers Jeff, I'll try the subject in lower light with a polarizer filter on.
