Cameras Not Permitted on Mall Property

I was at the Dulles Town Center mall in Virginia recently, with camera in tow, with my two daughters yesterday when a mall security guard rudely yelled at me to put my camera away as if I was holding a weapon. Is the No Camera on Mall Property typical of all malls? If so, how come they don't display it visibly anywhere in the mall?

Thanks.

An associate at work and I have been yelled at for taking pictures of cute kids on the street in Washington, DC where we work. I live in Northern Virginia. Ours has become a mean-spirited, punitive society. I can carry a holstered pistol, but not a camera. This is not the 60's, when photography students and amateurs freely shot photos of people. We are becoming a nation of security guards. Since so many people have fun with point'n shoots and tiny digitals, maybe the mall should have a sign prohibiting fun.

There is a very real and seemingly growing problem with "upskirt" and child-fetish perverts taking photos of unsuspecting people while they are out and about. Shopping malls, unlike sidewalks and parks, are private property. The owners have every right to restrict or prohibit photography (as well as firearms, even if you're licensed for conceal carry). They are interested in protecting their patrons' privacy as well as the copyrights, trademarks, and displays of the stores leasing space there.
