Photography Question

Deb Frantz

legality of shooting in a public place

I take my pocket size digital camera to work and if a coworker wants their photo taken, I will. Now it got to the owner (I work in a restaurant) that I'm doing it, and he's concerned about security (if the photo gets in the wrong hands), guests who might be in the background that didnt want their photo taken (we all know that can be cropped) and since it's his franchised restaurant, I didnt have his permission to take the photo whether it's of the coworker who asked, or his building from the outside. He threaten me with termination if I do it again without his permission and threaten me to the authorities. Can this really go this far. I do believe another coworker is blowing this out of proportion and trying to get me in trouble.

He has security cameras in the restaurant (to watch us employees from his office), but nothing is posted on the entrance or elsewhere that this property and guests are being monitored.
Please advise on this also, if by law?, there has to be something posted.?

As the owner/leasor of the property, the franchise owner has every right to prevent you from taking photos while on the premises.
