Digital Picture Printing Just a quick question about how to be sure I get a good print when I take a digital file to my photo lab for printing (I use a good "high-end" camera shop store for my processing). In Photoshop LE, I chose Image Size, Printing and changed the width to 4". In most cases, the length automatically sets itself to something like 5.33". If I choose the length as 6", the width gets automatically set to 4.5" Will either of these print properly? Appreciate the help!

Ask the lab if they print dead center. Usually they will offer 4X5's and 4X6's. Some cropping will ocurr. The prints should be fine.

What I do is crop the picture myself. I use the crop tool and set the parameters to 4 and 6. I then drag the cursor to get the contents I want in the picture. After I accept the crop I have an exact 4x6. This at the same time allows me to crop out any unwanted parts or at least crop off the extra where I want it to be cropped, not where the machine chooses. If your using an one hour lab your prints will probably not be as what you see on your monitor. You need to calibrate your monitor to to the lab. One hour labs aren't that sophisticated, and the results are poor. Should you use a pro lab they will color correct and you will get tremoudous print and the 8X10s will in many casas be cheaper than the one hour lab. Pro labs are for Professionals and they will not print for the amateur photographer so make up up a studio name and have fun!

Thanks everyone! I finally figured out how to set my exact dimensions for cropping in my PS LE software. All I can say is "doh!" in my best Homer Simpson imitation. I do use a 'high-end' lab...not a one hour. They don't call themselves a 'pro-lab' but they are experts in the camera field (been selling camera's in my area for 50 years...excellent reputation) and take great pride in the photo processing. It's out of my way but I came to the conclusion some time back that it was worth the effort.
