Want to learn more !!

Thank you for taking the time to read and answer my question which may be very basic for most of you, I want to learn how to take close up pictures of an item or a person and have the complete background seem blurry, the focus is 100% on the object, I own a Sony DSC-F717 Digital Cam, any suggestions..?? Thank you.

I am not familiar with your camera but, generally speaking, the larger the aperture (the smaller the f-number), the more blurred the background will look. Also, the longer the focal length, the more limited the depth-of-field. Using a telephoto lens set to its widest aperture will allow you to throw the background and the foreground out of focus. If you want to learn more I recommend "The A-Z of Creative Photography" by Lee Frost. It is an awesome book. Good luck.
