How to get a picture of the moon

Every time I take a digital picture of the moon, I get a fire ball type of picture. Never a true like moon. Jim in Mo.

Unless you're using 800mm + lens, the moon is a relatively small but bright object in an otherwise black sky. Thus your autoexposure meter tend to greatly overexpose the moon.

Similar to the "Sunny 16" rule, there is a "Moony 11" rule (set f/11 and shutter speed 1/film ISO), but it's only appropriate for a full moon. Other phases do not reflect as much light so you need to add more exposure. See http://home.hiwaay.net/~krcool/Astro/moon/howtophoto/ for more info.
