Yes, the EOS 3000N (sold as Rebel G II or XS-N in the US) is a decent SLR for a beginner. It can be used in full auto-exposure modes, but as you become more advanced it can also be used in aperture-priorty, shutter-priority, or full manual modes.

Hi! thanks a lot for the input! I still have so many questions to ask but I think i'll just save them for later until I have my own camera... Thanks again!!!

I am also a beginner and bought my first SLR Canon EOS 66 (that is the name EOS 3000N sells as in Asia). It is an exciting thing. The first roll produced fairly good pictures but camera shake and underexposure was very common as I had used an SLR for the first time, but with the second roll out I am glad to say that it is a lot better and my friends have also called many of these photographs as 'professional' by way of compliment. Gwyn, if you have not bought it yet, do go ahead. It is a lovely buy.
