What kind of flash do I need?

I don't have the slightest clue about the use of a flash. What kind of flash is best for what kind of picture? What do I need to know about apertures, ISO, and shutter speeds to use a flash?

  Dear Karin:
Yikes! Can-of-worms question! Run! Hide! Is it still there!
Karin, tell us about the camera you use, and that will begin to narrow some of your choices. Tell us, too, about why you think you need a flash, and/or about some specific kinds of pictures you might want to take.
Fortunately, one flash, wisely chosen, may actually serve you for many different situations where flash is helpful.
Speaking broadly on the topic, only certain shutter speeds can be used when you attach a flash to a camera (unless you have a camera with a leaf shutter). Higher ISO films generally help the flash work at greater distances. Larger f/stops, generally, also allow the flash to work at greater distances. More to follow...
