How to set F stop/aperature for b&w photos

When shooting b&w film should my F stop and aperature be set the same as I would for color? I have found that on a few occasions where I did not get a shadow on a color portrait, I did on the same shot in b&w. What am I doing wrong?

  Amy,
Exposure (aperture and shutter speed) is driven by film speed and subject illumination or luminance, not whether it's color or B&W. Illumination is how much light is falling on the subject and is measured using an incident light meter. Luminance is how much light is being reflected by the subject and is measured using a reflected light meter (this is the type of metering inside your camera).

Regarding the shadow, something changed between making the two photographs to create it, or to make it go away. The type of film you were using, including B&W or color, won't create or do away with shadows.
