Photography Question

Rick Gagnon

Can Development Lab Effect Quality of Negative?

I understand that the lab that you choose for developing your film can make all the difference in the quality of your finished print, i.e. cheap lab, marginal print quality. But as I scan my negatives into the computer for archival purposes, I'm not as concerned with the prints from the lab.

My question is does the lab affect the quality of the negative as well, or can the lab only affect the finished print?

Thanks!

So long as the techs operating the it are concientious about keeping the chemical solutions fresh and the machines calibrated and clean there will be no difference between film developed at a custom lab and a quicky 1-hour kiosk.

For color, temperature of developer has a huge effect and there's no margin for error. As I understand it, at one hour places they're able to get everything done so quickly because they raise the temperature of the developer and use less time that way. It can mess with the dyes. Any lab that has the big Q lab symbol in the window is a lab that must run control strips with each process which is monitored by Kodak for quality control- they are able to detect problems with agitating, temperature, which of any chemical may be off- and they make sure those labs know what they're doing. A one hour place can work for just fun pictures, but if you want to make sure your colors, contrast, and sharpness are intact on the neg, I'd go to a qlab.

I think there is a big differenc using any 1 hour photo lab compared to a professional lab. The big differece I notice is the quicky place doesn't really care or are not concerned too much on how many times they use the development chemicals. I too have a film scanner and I can tell you I get very dirty negatives back with the quicky place. I have hair, lint, and who knows what else all over them. With the pro lab I use I never get dirty or unusable negatives back. My pro lab offers the same price and also offers 1 hour developing. I also notice that my pro lab cares about the quality of the prints.
