Photography Question

Amie M. Rhoden

Good camera, bad camera?

Two of my friends are professional photographers one sports one fashion, they always laugh at my Canon Rebel G, I purchased 2 years ago. I have taken and enlarged over the past 2 years some beautiful pictures and have a very good eye for pictures. It is hard for me to share my work with them bc they think with respect bc of their years of college and experience with photography that little me with zero college hours clocked for photography that this is just a hobby or the simplicity of my camera. I am now studying on my own, is my Canon Rebel G, good enough if I want to really develop my work? Why do they make fun of my camera? Someone gave me my 80-200 lens recently why are my pictures so grainy, and they are not with my regular lens?

Let 'em laugh. I've run into brand and equipment level snobbery, too. No matter what you use, someone else's stuff is better. Look at what Henri Cartier Bresson did with with lenses that weren't as good optically as your zooms.

While not as ruggedly built as a "profesional" camera, the Rebel G is very capable and you need not feel "under equipped." The camera body is probably the least important item in making photographs. The photographer's eye and skill, and lens quality have far more bearing than the camera.

Wrt the 80-200 lens, what make/model? "Grainy" results are usually due to underexposure. What you call "grainy" may also be a lack of contrast or sharpness due to limitations of a cheap lens, or may be due to lens flare that can be lessened/eliminated simply by using a lens hood.

Thank you for you guys responses, I am going to start sharing my work on here so that I can get some constructive criticism. I feel better already due to these two responses, I had some of my enlargements out on my desk and my friend's (the sports photographer) parents were here, and they asked "Oooh Susan did you take these?", I said, "No, I did."
I shot a basketball tournament over the weekend so I cannot wait to see those. I believe after my reading over the weekend about my GRAINY problem it comes from using 800 speed film in bright light! I shot 400 and 200 with a flash over the weekend so we shall see.

thanks again, guys!
