A macro lens enables the photographer to get especially close to a subject. The close-up pictures you see of flowers, frogs, bugs, etc. are often shot with a macro lens. Macro lens come in different ratios; a 1:1 macro means that the subject is as big on the negative or slide as it is in real life. That's big! Some cameras also offer a macro mode which performs the same function - allowing the user to get real close to the subject.
