Photography Question

Shooting candids at a wedding as simple as possibl

I've been asked and volunteered to shoot candids at a friends wedding. In particuliar I have questions about the pictures that will be taken during the dance in the evening.

I have a simple but usually effective camera ( Minolta dynax 500si ) and I've had great success photographying my dogs playing in the house with 400 ISO and the camera set to action and the flash on. However, sometimes at night the flash isn't strong enough and the pictures don't turn out as good(darker and with blurry movement).

Now my question...
I live in Holland and in my city I'm finding it hard to find any speed higher than 400. I am hoping 800 will solve my low flash strength problem, what do you think? Also, if I can't get it, what tips can you offer using the 400 ISO with a fully automatic 35mm? ( am I right thinking leave it on action with the flash on and turn the camera length ways to minimize red eye?) I know this is doing it so simple, but I just don't trust myself yet in manual.

Thanks for you help.
Connie

I hope you have some time before this wedding. You need more flash for this job. You may well get red-eye, anyway. If it were not for the responsibility you have taken on, I would advise you to stay with the camera you have.
Do you know of a shop or web site that sells good used manual focus cameras? A good one with a 50-mm lens is surprisingly inexpensive. A great flash is the Vivitar 873, less than $75 new. Put the flash on a bracket that sets it off to the side of the camera. If you want to go this route, e-mail me through my web page, as there are things I need to tell you. This way requires some money, but the results will be astounding.
