Notebooks in the field...PC vs. MAC

I am considering buying my first laptop
for use in the field and have a PC at home. Should I go with a PC notebook or a Mac? A salesman in CompUSA recommended a Mac for a photographer like myself. It's enticing, because they seem to appeal to artists more than PCs do, but I'm hesitant because MACs are the unknown for me...any suggestions? If you vote for the PC, what brand would you recommend?

  Hello Marilyn,

I have both PC's (Windows) and Mac systems. Notebooks and desktops with each. My summart statement would be that people use Windows PCs when and because they HAVE to - people use Macs because they WANT to. I've found this to be very true in my own experience. Generally, the Macs get 4 to 5 times more use than the Windows machines. My Dell and IBM PCs only get turned on when something needs to be done that requires an application or function unique to Windows. I highly recommend the Mac!

I would disagree with the idea that Macs are somehow inherently more friendly to artists than Windows. The premier photographic editing software (Photoshop) is available in both formats and there is little equipment for photographers that is not going to be compatible with Windows.

If you currently use Windows, I personally feel it would be a mistake to change systems on a laptop. Stay with what you are familiar as you will not see any major benefit with a Mac than with a PC.

I used to sell computers when I was in graduate school part time. There is generally a higher mark up on Mac's and more commission than on PC's ... a possible reason why a salesman would suggest purchasing a Mac to someone who currently uses a PC (a sales tactic that I feel is pretty sleazy) ... Just as I would not recommend a Mac user switching to a PC on a whim, I would not suggest switching from PC to Mac because its more "artist friendly"

People have this perception that Macs are somehow more "artist" friendly ... Nonsense. I currently use a Windows XP Pro based system with Photoshop 7 on a laptop. I use a Minolta Dimage Slide scanner connected to the laptop and I have had no problems. Windows XP Pro and Photoshop 7 integrate seamlessly and complement each other wonderfully!

Why go through a new learning curve AND deal with compatability issues when you have to transfer data between the PC and the laptop. Have you considered that if you keep both computers and both are of different systems, you will have to buy different versions of software or purchse some sort of conversion program to go from PC to Mac.
