Tell us what kind of camera/flashes/equipment you will be using (a tripod perhaps).

I'll be using an Om-2 with an assortment of different lenses, probably my 100mm, and a Nikon F2 with a 50mm f/1.2 lens and possibly with a vivtar automatic tele converter. no tripods or flashes.

Fast lens. High speed film. If flash allow, use it. If your camera or flash supports rear-curtain sync, use it too. Since they are your friend's band, you can ask them to pose for you unless they ask you specifically to take a picture when they are performing.

The two sample photos were taken with a Kodak Supra 400 film, pre measured the exposure data and set my camera on manual and WAIT for the 'break'.
