How to shoot night time scenes

I recently went on vacation to Mexico. I took a lot of dusk to night time city scenes. Most of my pics came out blurry or with streaks of lights(where I wasn't still enough). I am using the night time shooting mode but I didn't have a tripod at the time. I set the camera on tables and ledges, etc. to steady the camera but the pics were still blurry. Is there something I can do to help take good night time scenes without a tripod. Is there something else that is small enought to carry around that could take the place of a tripod. Thanks for all your help.

What type/speed film have you been trying to use? What exposures are you using?

If you do not want to carry the normal tripod, Sunpak has a few very affordable minipod (or tablepod) that has a fixed ball head or pan head. There are other brands of foldable/flexible tablepod too (SLIK, for example) Another must have for night time photos is a remote shutter release. Pressing the shutter with your own hand may cause the picture to be blurry. If your camera does not take any kind of remote shutter release, try to use the self-timer on your camera. If your camera have mirror-lockup, use it. If your camera has none of those features, try to press the shutter as gently as you can. Also watch out for the winds. Hope this helps.
