exposure with wide angle lens for canon AE-1

Hi,

I shot some houses for my freind's mother for mother's day. When I got the film back I was very shocked.. because the half of the images were super over exposed. I couldn't figure why, since it was shot in one day (within an hour). Then I realized that I used wideangle lens for some shots and they all were overexposed. I used Canon AE-1 and wideangle lens is Kiron. Is it possible that when I switched the lens I had to do something differently? I checked exposure with a meter in the camera. All shots used with original lens for AE-1 came out fine. Please let me know what I was doing wrong.
Thank you.

I'll take a wild guess and suggest that you were shooting in the AE-1's normal shutter priority exposure mode, and that the Kiron lens's aperture was not closing down to the proper setting because it (a) was not quite seated properly, or (b) was set to f/2.8 or f/4 (or whatever the widest aperture is) instead of "A". If it was not set to A, then the "M" (manual exposure) signal in the viewfinder should have been lit.

Have you used this Kiron lens before? If it is for Canon FL mount instead of FD, then it will not have the "A" aperture setting and you must use it in Stop-Down mode. To meter in stop-down mode with the AE-1, press the DoF preview button until it locks, then adjust the aperture and/or shutter speed until the viewfinder meter needle aligns with the stop-down mark (a box next to 5.6 on the scale). Be sure to unlock the DoF preview button before changing lenses.

There's a peculiarity with Kiron wides. Put it on your Canon, close the lens down to about f8 or smaller, and activate the stop-down function. Look into the front of the lens and see that the diaphragm is closing down. If it isn't, it has the Kiron 28 f2 syndrome, a broken aperture mechanism. This lens has a wonderful reputation for sharpness and total lack of distortion, so you may want to have it repaired.

Thank you for responding so quickly. I really appreciate your answers. I tried to see if the diaphragm was closing down or not and it does with Kiron. But with canon lens I can even see the size difference but with Kiron whatever the aparature is it seems all the same.. So like you said maybe this lens has problem, and maybe not me(hahaha). I will see if I can find a place to get it fixed.
Thanks again for your responses, both of you!
