Shoot Slides?

I just don't get it. I love to shoot slide film, especially Velvia, but I just received my latest batch of slides back from Slideprinter and they enclosed a letter stating they no longer make Type "R" prints. Fuji and Kodak no longer make the paper. To get prints from your slides you must now have them scaned to cd, your pick of resolution, which if your not willing to pay out decent money for a good scan is virtually the same res you can achieve from SLR digital cameras of today. So what is the point of still shooting slides? Can I obtain the quality from digital that I can from having slides scanned?
If I wanted to print something bigger than 11X14 will digital or scans of my slides be capable of doing this? I am new to digital shooting and have a 4 meg point and shoot.

First of all when I started shooting full time professionally it was as a fine art nature photoprapher shooting medium format "slide" film. At first I was getting Cibachrome (Ilfachrome classic) prints made and thought they were the bees knees. Then I heard about this place that would drum scan my slides and print them out with a laser printer. Well I took one of my old images that I had used to make a Cibachrome print with that was hangin on my wall. I sent it to them to see what they could do. I'm embarassed to display the Cibachrome now. It was amazing the quality, detail, and color I got from that scanned image compared to the old Ciba. Since then I've been a digital guy.

I've made enlargements from scanned negatives (35mm) beyond 16x20 that looked extremely good. I know guys shooting digital cameras (in the 2-4mp range) that routinely make very nice 16x20 prints. Whether you go digital or scan your slides I think you can still be very happy with the results.

From my experience, there are places that will still print slides, at least in my area of Florida. Mostly, though, what they do is to make the slide into a negative and then print the negative. That way you also have a negative to use later on if you want to have more prints made. It's not the cheapest way to get them, but it does leave one a few options for later.

Thanks for the replies. I just tried my first digital and even though I haven't printed anything from the shots yet they seem to be of decent quality. I used the Nikon 4300 for a week and took about 600 shots of which I kept about 400. I am going to try printing these before long to see how they turn out. I also believe I will try a few scans to see how I like them also. Even though I am a novice I love to take photos all the time and hope that eventually I will get a shot that I feel is worthy of hanging on my wall. I am never satisfied enough to hang one of my own. Once again thanks.

Donnie
